Setting the Scene
This non-profit fosters a community of artists and links them with the broader public. On one hand, they’re inward-facing: centered on making. On the other, they’re external-facing: focused on exhibiting.
Within the historic, industrial building we had to work with, we sought to bridge these worlds: the inner circle and the wider community. Artists would feel a familial connection to each other, yet each studio would feel like part of a larger hive.
Making It Happen
We navigated many complexities, from landlord relationships to grant requirements to constraints with the historic landmarked building. But we came out with a design that streamlined Public Functionary’s operations, transforming a previously-disjointed collection of spaces into a functional and connected environment. The space now centers the artists and their work — you can feel it.
