Full-service architectural firm. Fully committed to community.
At HMM Architects, everything starts with sharing and listening. We want to hear your vision and aspirations—whether it’s for a home, building, or something completely different.
We’ll partner with you from the earliest stages and see your project through to completion. Along the way, we use technology to help you visualize your space, optimize for sustainability, and make sure the project stays on schedule and on budget. From beginning to end, you’ll have direct communication with our experienced principal—a level of service that ensures your goals and needs are being met.
Our experience and passion intersect at the urban core.
Cities are the incubators of our strongest communities and our best hope for a sustainable future. That’s why we’re so dedicated to bringing – and keeping – the urban core alive.
We believe that thoughtful architecture and design can amplify the urban core’s character and capacity—to create belonging, spark opportunity, and foster relationships—and we seek out partners and clients who believe the same.

Caring for the environment, one project at a time.
Buildings use a lot of energy. We work on reducing the amount they do as much as possible. Whether using simple tactics like building orientation, advanced framing or shading devices; or more robust ones like modeling energy usage, integrating passiv-haus measures, or use of renewable resources, we are focused on delivering buildings with lower carbon footprints. This minimizes the impact on the environment and maximizes the money residents and tenants can save—a win-win for the earth and for us.

Mathias Mortenson, AIA, LEED AP
Mathias has over 20 years of experience in the design and construction industries. He started out as a laborer, learning the ropes and building a passion for craftsmanship. From there, Mathias became project architect for firms in New York, LA, Chicago, Seattle, and San Francisco before becoming a construction coordinator for a national contractor in Minneapolis—working on projects of all sizes, styles, and levels of complexity. Most recently, in 2015, Mathias started HMM based on the belief that architecture is both an art and a service—and that equal attention to both is necessary for the best outcome possible.
David Markie, Associate Architect, AIA
David grew up in Minnesota spending time outdoors playing sports, and spending time indoors drawing. His passion for nature and the outdoors led him to volunteer at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These experiences ultimately influenced David’s decision to center his architecture career around sustainability and regenerative building. He is currently undertaking LEED certification and is aiming for Living Building Challenge accreditation and Certified Passive House Consult.
