DESCRIPTION: This challenging site required an inventive solution. The property dropped precipitously from the curb down to a pastoral meadow; inbetween was a stretch of woods that the client wanted to preserve. How to reduce impact on the property as much as possible, save the greatest number of trees, and provide the best views? Our response was to sit the house on top of precast concrete rakers. This structural member, usually used only for large-scale stadium seating, limited the foundation to four piers while letting the house gracefully follow the descent of the topography. The roof of the house was designed to be easily accessible from the kitchen and living rooms while providing a wide open sheltered perch from which to enjoy the views.
